The Silk Road offers a global selection of tapas, has a broad wine list with every wine (except the most expensive ones) available by the glass, and a wide selection of beers on tap and by the bottle. Last time we went, we loved some of the dishes, others not so much. Service started out poor tonight: ‘is one of these people our waiter?’ but improved as things died down. Our waiter was the one who looked like Rick Moranis in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. If we had wanted to play it safe, we could have re-ordered some of our favourites, but we wanted to shake it up a bit, so we ordered the Sushi of the day to start, and because it’s a tapas restaurant and the plates are small, Caroline picked a Confit of Duck mini-bunwich while I ordered a vegetarian Pad Thai. The Sushi was dull; the rice was soft and had no vinegar flavour, but the other two things were good. Caroline ordered A-Z Chardonnay from the Dundee Hills in Oregon and liked it. For a change, I had a local ale. Something Eddy. I can’t find it on their website.
We picked two dishes that we knew next, the Skewered Beef Tenderloin for me, the Hot Pickled Beets for her. I tried to get a Japanese beer to go with my Japanese beef, but they were sold out of Ichiban. Instead I ordered a wine, foolishly choosing the Oregon Pinot. Lovely wine after dinner, but the worst job of matching food and wine I’ve ever done. That beef is spicy, and the poor little Pinot might as well have been water.
We did share a dessert, the Vanilla Bean Genoise. It was okay, but kind of, well… vanilla. Overall, the evening was kind of hit and miss, but I thought the price was fair, and there’s lots more interesting stuff on the menu that we haven’t tried yet, plus it changes seasonally, so we might go back one day.
